Trek
to The South PoleAntarctica is possibly the most remote and unique
environment on earth and now you have the opportunity to participate
in the adventure experience of a lifetime! Join us on a epic ski traverse
all the way across the continent to the South Pole! The team will meet
in Punta Arenas on the southern tip of Chile. From here we utilise an
Ilyushin 76 aircraft to gain access to a blue ice runway on the Antarctic
continent, a flight of around four hours. This landing site is known
as Patriot Hills, is situated at 80 degrees south, and is the Antarctic
base for our expedition. After final preparations are completed the group
is shuttled from Patriot Hills to the edge of the Antarctic Continent
by ski equipped Twin Otter aircraft. The plane departs and we are left
to the silence of Antarctic and the huge task of walking the 1200km over
the next two months to the South Pole! The first few days will be spent
hauling smaller loads in our sleds as the first destination along the
route is to retrace our flight path back to Patriot Hills. Being en route
to the Pole, Patriot Hills provides an ideal stopping place to re-supply
and sort out any problems with equipment, which may arise in those first
few days. Skis will be worn for the entirety of the expedition (with
a few possible exceptions) which will be the telemark type with 'skins'
on the base for traction. We share tents and the chores of cooking. The
coldest part of the day will be in the breakdown of the camp. Each day
we will move for (5 to) 8 to 10 hours with regular rests for food and
fluid intake. After visiting Patriot Hills camp for the second time,
we begin the trek in earnest. We will carry provisions on our sleds to
last us until we arrive at our pre-placed supply cache approximately
38 days into the journey. The cache will be placed (by) along the route
on a specially chartered flight and will sustain us for the final leg
to the South Pole. Navigation will be accomplished using GPS navigation
equipment. NOT INCLUDED: Air travel to and accomodation in Punta Arenas,
visas and airport fees, personal insurance, cost of any rescue, personal
clothing, boots, sleeping
gear and skis.
Glacier
Trek For Two - SIGet away from it all and enjoy the peace and tranquillity
of New Zealand’s spectacular mountain landscape on a one day trek into the Mt
Aspiring National Park. You'll be immersed in the dramatic mountain and bush
scenery on this trek with views of the amazing glaciers of Rob Roy directly overhead. This
guided trek takes you on a wonderfully scenic journey up the Matukituki valley
where you will be surrounded by mountains and true wilderness. You will be escorted
by knowledgeable and friendly guides with a wealth of experience in the mountains.
At 9.00am you will be picked up from your accommodation in Wanaka and driven
to the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park. The journey up the Matukituki valley
is very scenic; you will be driving past lake Wanaka and through farm land with
deer, cattle and sheep in the pastures. The vehicle arrives at the end of the
road after a 1 hr journey at a point known as Raspberry hut, named after a farmers
hut nearby. The trek begins over grassy pastures for 25 minutes up the main valley.
We cross the Matukituki river on a suspension bridge with a dramatic view of
the mountain river cascading over the boulders below. On the other side the trail
enters the forest and follows up beside the Rob Roy Stream. The trail is a well-formed
track, which weaves its way through the forest meandering in and out of creeks.
All along we have glimpses of the high faces on Mt Rob Roy above. We walk with
regular breaks to enjoy the scenery and after 2 hours we leave the bush and enter
the sub alpine zone. It’s time for lunch and we sit down to a genuine alpine
picnic. We enjoy the antics of the Keas (the New Zealand Alpine parrot), who
are very inquisitive and have ‘big’ personalities so there are plenty of photo
opportunities. The mass of Mt Rob Roy provides a very dramatic backdrop to the
surroundings and it is not uncommon to see large sections of glacial ice fall
from the glaciers high above and crash onto the slopes below in small avalanches.
Eventually we have to leave the mountains behind and re-enter the bush for the
descent back to the trail end at Raspberry hut again. When you finish the day
you will no doubt be reflecting on the beauty and grandeur of the Rob Roy Glacier
trek.
Helicopter
Alpine Trek - SIThis experience is an incredibly scenic day walk along easy
angled ridges overlooking the Mt Aspiring National Park. This alpine zone, usually
only accessible by many hours of hard uphill climbing is made possible through
the use of a helicopter to access this remote and pristine area. You will meet
your guide at 8am in Wanaka for a briefing of the day’s events and an equipment
check. Your guide will drive you to road end at the entrance to the Mt Aspiring
National park and the beginning of your adventure. The journey up the Matukituki
valley is very scenic and you will be driving past Lake Wanaka and through farmland
with deer, cattle and sheep in the pastures. The journey takes an hour to a point
known as Raspberry Hut, named after a farmers hut nearby. Toilets are available
at this point. The helicopter arrives from its base and after a safety brief
you are all aboard and flying into the mountains. The helicopter gains height
quickly, traversing dramatic ridges and river gorges to drop you off on a saddle
overlooking the beautiful Matukituki valley with picture postcard views of Mt
Aspiring. You are now high in the sub alpine zones with a myriad of alpine flowers
and grasses interspersed with colourful schist rocks. In the early season you
will be walking on snow in places also. There is no track as you traverse the
summer snowfields on to the glacier scoured rock yet the walking is never too
hard or strenuous. The route we trek is along low angled mountain tops with constant
views of the heavily glaciated peaks of the Mt Aspiring region and there is plenty
of opportunity to stop for photos or merely to admire the views! The outlook
from your majestic lunch spot is of hanging glaciers, waterfalls and a beech
forest filled valley. The New Zealand mountain parrot, called the Kea, often
come for a visit in the vain hope of tempting you into feeding them. These mischievous
birds are extremely intelligent and spend much of their spare time investigating
(and often in the process destroying) people’s packs and other items left lying
around. After lunch we continue our trek through passes and over small peaks
to our helicopter pick up point in the afternoon. We re-board the helicopter
for the descent into the valley below.
Helicopter
Mountain Climb - SIThe helicopter climbs steadily towards the snowy peaks
from the valley below to settle on a plateau high on the side of a mountain.
As the helicopter departs, leaving you there, you will gasp in awe at the incredible
alpine scenery and the mountain you will be climbing today! You will meet your
guide at 8am in Wanaka for a briefing of the days events and an equipment issue.
Your guide will drive you to the base of the mountain and the start of the days
adventure. The helicopter will arrive and after a safety briefing you will board
the aircraft for the very scenic flight into the mountains. After the helicopter
departs you will climb the gradually steepening slopes towards the snow line.
Once at the snow the group will stop for a lesson from the guide on how to walk
safely on the snow and the other relevant techniques for getting around in the
mountains. The guide will then lead you on towards the peak of the mountain and
you will be able to stop periodically for photos and rests as necessary. The
focus of the day will be towards your enjoyment and for you to learn about the
skills required for the climb you are embarking on. The guide will chose an appropriate
route for the aspirations of the climbing party and you will be secured with
ropes and harnesses as necessary. The climb will be comfortably challenging,
but set at a level to maximise your enjoyment and learning of climbing techniques.
The exact nature of the climb will depend on when during the season you are undertaking
the climb, as in late summer there will be less snow and more rock for the ascent.
The summit is always a place to celebrate and reflect on the efforts of the day
and a place to appreciate the grandeur of the surrounding mountainous terrain.
The descent generally takes less time than the climb up and we have time to enjoy
the alpine setting before the helicopter comes back in to take us back to the
valley below. This climbing day is intended to be suitable for beginner climbers
who would like a taste of what mountain climbing is about and for those who love
to be in the outdoors. More difficult objectives can be arranged for appropriately
skilled and experienced climbers on request.
Helicopter
Mount French 4 Day Traverse - SIStart with a dramatic helicopter flight to
a mountain col before embarking on an incredibly scenic alpine traverse to climb
a peak near Mt Aspiring. You'll travel across glaciers, snowy peaks, alpine herbfields,
steep bush covered ridges and finally walk out via the beautiful Matukituki valley. You
will meet your guide at 9am in Wanaka for a briefing and an equipment issue.
Your guide will drive you to the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park and the start
of your adventure. The helicopter will arrive and after a safety briefing you
will board the aircraft for the very scenic flight into the mountains. After
the helicopter departs you are left on a remote alpine col on the edge of the
Bonar Glacier, with a view of snowy peaks that seems to go forever. It is two
hours walk to the hut where you will be spending the night. Before the walk,
the group will stop for a lesson from the guide on how to walk safely on the
glacier and other relevant techniques for getting around in the mountains. The
next day is spent learning general snow and glacier skills. As well as learning
how to use your ice axe and crampons, you will practise with ropes and snow anchors.
The terrain near the hut is ideal for this, and a climb to the top of the Shipowner
ridge rewards you with views over the Therma & Volta glaciers to the north of
Mt Aspiring. The third day is summit day! The climb begins by climbing up the
Bonar Glacier to the "Quarter deck". You are able to leave your main pack here
and tackle the final part of the climb unencumbered. The summit is always a place
to celebrate and reflect on the efforts of the day and a place to appreciate
the grandeur of the surrounding mountainous terrain. After the climb, the descent
route takes you down French Ridge to another high alpine hut. This hut is perched
above 'Gloomy Gorge' and has spectacular views of Mt Rob Roy and over the Matukituki
valley. Dinner that night is a relaxed occasion as you reflect on a full day
and your achievement. The final day is a walk out down the Matukituki valley
itself. The ridge drops into the beech forest and is a reminder that climbing
is not all about snow and ice. The last few hours are a gentle gradient following
the river back to the car at the road end.

Truly out of this world.. TWELVE DAYS OF SUPERB SEA KAYAKING at Prince William
Sound - Harriman Fjord ("Little Glacier Bay") This fjord is a place of spectacular
beauty and diversity that was only discovered 100 years ago. Numerous peaks of
the Chugach Range rise from the ocean to over 9,000 feet above us. From these
lofty peaks, five stunning glaciers descend into the sea. We begin outside the
fjord and paddle in, letting the wonders unfold before us. We spend a day at
a beach we call "Thunder Bay" that overlooks the confluence of Cascade, Barry,
and Cox glaciers. The sight and thundering sound of huge icebergs falling into
the sea is a never to be forgotten experience. FIVE DAYS OF INCREDIBLE BASE-CAMP
HIKING at Paradise Lakes in The Chugach Mountains have it all! There are towering
mountains, glaciers, crystalline lakes, tundra and forest. There is the possibility
of seeing caribou, bear, moose, wolves and dall sheep. Your destination is Upper
Paradise Lake, at 45 minute floatplane ride from Anchorage. The ridges and valleys
that surround the lake make for some great hiking! We fly in by float plane -
an incredible experience in itself. This trip has been designed specifically
with adventurers in mind. We call this an Escorted Trip - your trip leader is
there to provide safety and to organise logistics - not to provide a running
commentary or to pamper! We have found that adventurous people prefer it this
way.

Walk For Two -SIFrom Christchurch a full day eco, scenic and walking tour
to Arthurs Pass in the Southern Alps. Visits to the limestone tors at Castle
Hill, Cave Stream and the magnificent Otira Gorge. Three to four hours walking
through tussock grasslands and native beech forest.A full day tour into the heart
of the Southern Alps via the coaching route, built in the 1860's, that gave access
to the goldfields of the West Coast. This is an opportunity to see some of the
Canterbury farming landscape and discover the grandeur and magnificence of the
Southern Alps. The route passes through the rich farming land of the broad Canterbury
plains and enters the mountains over the sudden 900m (3000ft) Porters Pass. Here
are wide glaciated valleys with tussock grasslands and green Beech forest clad
slopes leading to screes and rocky summits. The valley floors are home to sheep
and cattle farmers grazing predominantly merino sheep for wool. This is an exciting
and challenging land suited to hardy people and animals. An unforgiving environment
with a rugged climate. We take time to spend 3 to 4 hours, in a variety of locations,
exploring wonderful limestone tors and walking through the Beech forests and
tussock grasslands. We take time to picnic at a scenic spot so we can take in
the magnificent scenery, the wonderful lakes and rivers and the amazing gorges.
We enjoy the birds, the vegetation and the varied life of this special place.
We visit Arthur's Pass township, which is the Headquarters of the Arthur's Pass
National Park and grew up when 9km Otira railway tunnel was drilled under the
Alps in the early 20th century. The town is true alpine village with many of
the early tunnellers cottages still standing. Today they are in use as holiday
houses. We drive over the pass and into the Otira gorge with it's magnificent
mountain surrounds and amazing feats of engineering. The return to Christchurch
is a leisurely drive back through the mountains and across the plains with the
setting sun at our backs and the views that we had our backs to in the morning.

Forest Walk For Two - SIFrom Christchurch a full day eco, scenic and walking
tour to Akaroa on Banks Peninsula. Stunning coastal views on the drive through
Lyttelton Harbour and around the bays, with three to four hours walking in lowland
Podocarp forest, and remnant upland Totara forest. This is a full day tour through
the two extinct volcanos that form Banks Peninsula. The day starts in the drowned
volcano of what today is Lyttelton Harbour and from here we go via the Northern
bays of Banks Peninsula, to Pigeon Bay where we walk through remnant of the ancient
native podocarp forest. Travelling on, we climb onto the crater rim of the Akaroa
Harbour, the 2nd extinct volcano and enjoy another walk and a picnic lunch with
views over the harbour. After lunch we take a third walk in some of the best
regenerating forest in Canterbury before we make our down to the charming little
town of Akaroa, with its distinctive air of past French colonial settlement.
The day's tour is focussed on the series of walks, 3 to 4 hours in total, that
take in remnant native forests at low level, and at high level. We see how the
European settlers have turned a forest landscape into a rich sheep and cattle
farming pastoral land. The return journey is via the main highway passing the
renowned Barry's Bay dairy factory and The Hilltop Hotel. Both of these are local
landmarks. The route takes us past the large (5th largest in NZ), shallow, estuarine
Lake Ellesmere which has an abundance of wildfowl. With its contrast of steep
grasslands and deep sea inlets a day spent visiting this area is always spiritually
satisfying.
